Lighting

Nothing adds more ambience to your home when you entertain as the right lighting.  Start with the basics of positioning your tree where it will be used to add light to your room so that you can avoid having harsh lamplight nearby to redirect the focus.  Take into account whether you will have a fire lit during dinner as well as the natural light in the room if you will be entertaining during the day.   Bring the ambience of candlelight to a room without using any candles by dipping bulbs in yellow food coloring.  Adjust the amount of light by installing simple dimmer switches to your overhead or recessed lighting.  Then fill in the dark corners using candles.

The frosted candle holders above can be made or purchased at any time throughout the year.  They add wonderful lighting to a cocktail table, a dessert table, or a mantle piece.  See our New Looks for Old Favorites section for easy instructions.

Candles - DecorativeYou can add decorative ribbons, leaves, berries, bows, anything you wish to candles that adorn your home all year long.  Simply tying some leaves and ribbon to a scented bathroom candle can bring hints of the holiday season into every room in your home.
beeswax candles and tapered candles

Whether they are tall tapers or small votive candles, you will want to make sure that all the wicks are cut down to 1/4" before lighting.  Beeswax candles are a bit more expensive but in the long run they offer an even light source and continuous flame more than straight paraffin candles.  Make sure that candles are placed on the table with enough volume to illuminate each guests plate.  Also be sure to buy unscented candles for the dinner table.  Scented candles can interfere with the appetite for your carefully planned menu.
