Projects that Make Memories

Creating Photo Magnets

What you will need:

Lid from frozen juice can,
magnet that will fit in lid,
glue, scissors, gift wrap & construction paper,
photos and tape

1.  Trace the lid from a frozen juice can on a piece of construction paper and cut it out.
2.  Cut your photo in a circle to fit the center of the round lid.  Trace the lid a second time on a larger piece of construction paper.  Use the traced circle as the center of a flower and draw petals around the circle.
3.  Draw the same flower on colorful gift wrap and cut it out.  Glue the gift wrap flower on top of the construction paper flower.
4.  Glue or tape photo to lid and glue a magnet strip to the back of the flower.

To make the photo bookmark:

1.  Cut a 2 1/2 x 7 inch strip of construction paper and an equal size strip of gift wrap.
2.  Cut an opening in the gift wrap strip that is slightly smaller than the photo.  Tape the photo to the back of the gift wrap so that it shows through the opening.
3.  Tape two pieces of ribbon at the bottom of construction paper.
4.  Put glue on the paper's edges.  Lay the gift wrap strip on top of construction paper.

Tree decorations

Instead of the same old popcorn garland for your tree, try this colorful change of pace!  Using thread and a needle string together gumdrops to make garland.  Just be sure that you don't eat too many of the supplies!

Homemade Snow Globes

What you will need:
Small ornaments or figurines to use as scenery
Any size jar with a tight fitting lid
Epoxy glue (available in art stores)
Glycerin (available in drug stores)Small amount of oil-based enamel paint
Distilled water
Sand paper

A fabulous decoration that can be enjoyed by young and old.  This is sure to be an ornament that will be saved for years to come!  You will want to start with a jar that is an appropriate size for whatever ornament or decorative piece you plan on using as the snow globe scene.  Any size will work.  Make sure that the jar has a tight fitting lid and is not warped or damaged in any way.  It needs to make a tight seal.  Paint the jar lid with an oil-based enamel paint.  Sand the inside of the lid until the surface is rough.  Using clear-drying epoxy (available in any art store), glue the scenery pieces to the inside of the lid.  Let the epoxy dry fully.  Fill the jar almost to the top with distilled water and add a pinch of glitter.  Add a drop of glycerin (available at drugstores).  The glycerin will keep the glitter from falling too quickly.  You will want the glitter to float down.  Be careful not to add too much glycerin or the glitter will stick to the bottom of the jar when it is flipped -- just a drop should do.  Screw on the lid tightly.  Turn the jar over and watch it snow!
