Now that the holidays are around the corner, you'll have parties to attend and people to visit. You'll definitely want to look and feel your best. One way to do so is to experiment with a new hairstyle or color. This way your new look will be the "mane" attraction at gatherings.

Be "tressed to impress" when you step out for holiday functions. Follow the advice of Damien Carney, international artistic director of Joico, who offers the latest trends, products and tips for the season.

1. What direction do you see the hair trend going for the holiday season? Texture is huge, but it's subtle -- texture that looks undone, loose. It shouldn't look like you've tried hard to achieve the look. It's all about looseness -- almost like an "I don't care" attitude but, at the same time, there's lots of preparation and work that goes into creating that look.

Whether the hair is long, short, pink or black is irrelevant. It's about the mood. Using the right products and styling techniques with the right color will create a "total" look. Layering will give lots of texture regardless of hairstyle, type or length. The fringe is still important: It can be asymmetrical, hacked into, chopped into, broken up, fractured, light, willowy, veiled or delicate.

2. What shades of hair color are right for the holiday season? Holiday colors are ultra-natural and chic. The hair is healthy, rich, vibrant and not overly colored. Expect to see more solid colors but subtle tones within tones.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, there's the youth market which is always experimenting with colors: red, cherry, wine, Bordeaux, raisin-rich, deep colors. There's a fluorescent feel to the color that's more vibrant. In fact, it's more about the vibrancy than the shade. We're seeing more blocks of color that will emphasize the design and silhouette of the hairstyle. In general, you can't have a right or wrong color. Fashion, style, clothes and makeup are all eclectic at the moment: There's not one right or wrong feel for the season. It's about personal identity or how you want to be perceived by others. You want to make your own statement.

3. Are there certain looks that you would suggest for short or long hair? Focus on texture. Rough it up. Fashion is not about dictating hair as long or short. Length is irrelevant, but texture is important. That's what makes the silhouette and the hair look modern and in season. Layering is the key; the messier, the better. If you're going to wear hair curly, liberate it and don't flatten it -- expand it. We're seeing more volume, but not in an obvious way.

Styling hair with volumizing products, such as Joico Hi-Rise Hair volume booster, I-C-E HAIR Spiker Blast Hair Spray, Joico I.C.E. Whip firm-hold designing foam, or I-C-E HAIR Reactor will give body and volume and change the fabric and appearance of the hair. If hair is bone straight, you can still throw in some rollers. Velcro or heated rollers will give it body when you want to see a bit of difference between day and night.

4. What styling product do you consider an all-around product? I-C-E HAIR Reactor is great because it works on all hair textures and lengths. If you work it into curly hair, it encourages curls. If you work it into fine hair, it makes you feel like you have more hair. It's great for blow-drying hair with a brush, or you can just let it dry naturally. It's a nice, soft hold.

I also love Volissima Volumizing Lotion and Volissima Volumizing Gel to add instant volume. Because they're heat-activated, they defend heat styling. They make my work easier because they're pliable. You can never have too much volume -- you can always reduce it.

For smoothing textured hair or any hair that lacks moisture, shine and pliability, try K-Pak Smoothing Balm. It's also great for making hair more reflective. You can straighten it with a brush, or put rollers in the hair. It makes dull, lifeless hair become vibrant, healthy and shiny.

When I want the ultimate soft, silky, shiny hair I use Silk Result. It stays soft until your next shampoo. It's my lifesaver; when all else fails and when hair is dull and flat, everything comes to life with this product.

5. Do you have a suggestion for a holiday party look? Ponytails are hot, but do it loosely in an undone manner. Place the ponytail between the crown and nape area (putting it into this central zone helps create a modern look). You can backcomb the hair at the top or front to create a little lift, then smooth it loosely with fingers, pull back and secure with a ponytail holder. Whatever falls out and around the face is cool. If the ponytail is short, don't worry -- it looks even cooler!

If you are wearing your hair down, make sure it's big with waves, curls, crimping or texture. Whether hair is short or long, the essence of how you're wearing it is important. Length is not important here, the finish is.
