Gourd Candles
Homemade candles make a
wonderful
addition to any table and this gourd candle
brings a touch of autumn to any meal.
Carve out a gourd (a
small pumpkin, acorn
squash or anything you wish to use) and keeping
with the natural contours of the gourd, smooth the
inside edges. Melt wax in a double boiler,
Add color by using a candle dye that you can get at most craft
stores (such as aniline dyes).
Prepare the
gourd by placing it so that it is steady and wax will not spill
out. Crimp wick to the metal plate (you can purchase them
already joined) and insert in the middle of the gourd. if
needed, wrap wick around a pencil to keep it from falling
into the wax and to keep it center.
Pour the
completely melted wax into the gourd and set aside until cooled
and hardened (about 5 hours). If the middle is sunken in,
add more wax and set aside.
Remove the skin
of the gourd to reveal your candle. To flatten the bottom,
use an old pan or tin and heat it briefly over the double boiler.
place the candle on the pan and move the candle around until the
candle sits level.
